Ten Tips for a Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

Wedding Tips

It’s time for a vendor spotlight! Today, I’m with Angelina of Shear Joy Salon and we’re talking about bridal hair styling.

Angelina is a graduate of Sunstate Academy and has been a professional stylist for 2 years. She has been published three times on latest-hairstyles.com. She’s given me ten tips that brides need to know about their wedding day hair styling.

I met with Angelina and one of her brides, Alyssa at Shear Joy Salon for Alyssa’s trial. They decided on a variation on a classic half-up style with lots of volume and delicate details.

1: Do a trial before the wedding day if possible. This is a good time to integrate any accessories into your style, bonus points if you do an engagement session with your photographer with your snazzy new hair!

2: If you bring photos of hairstyles, understand that styling is an art, and that what your stylist creates might not be a 100% replica of the photo you brought, even if the photo you bring is something your stylist created.

3: Expect your curls and waves to be tighter than you may be used to when the style is freshly done, they’ll fall naturally during the day, and this will keep you looking your best.

4: Your stylist may seem like they are using more product on your hair than you are used to. This is required for your style to hold all day, hairspray is your friend!

5: Extensions are a great option for adding density, length or both. Clip-ins are the most affordable option and and are typically the most versatile. They can be moved to where the desired style requires and also hold a style very well whether up or down.

6: Wear a button down or loose necked top on your wedding day. It will make getting changed much easier and will help keep your hair in place.

7: Pack a few extra accessories like bobby-pins, hair ties, and safety pins in your in your bag. If you hire Angelina (Which you totally should!) she carries things like this in her kit, but its always better to have what you need.

8: Wash your hair before your big day. Clean hair will have all the oil and product washed out, and your stylist will have a fresh canvas to work with. If they need to add grit into your hair for the style to hold, they can easily do so.

9: After the party is over, if your hair was teased or back combed to create your style, please brush it out gently. Preferably this should be done with your hair dry, start at the ends and work your way up in small sections. If you prefer to brush it out in the shower, apply conditioner generously, it will help the brush to slip through your hair.

10: Stick to the classics. often times brides will want to make a significant change to their hair for their wedding, this is usually not advisable, but if you do want to make a change, think it over for a few days first.

Angelina is currently booking 2021 dates and can be reached on Instagram or in person at Shear Joy Salon.

Styled Wedding at Two Sisters Ranch

Session Stories

WOW! That’s all I can really say about the wonderful styled shoot that Kelsey and the crew over at Two Sisters Ranch hosted on October 11th. In spite of the rainy Florida day, the session went off without a hitch, and there was no shortage of fantastic decorations, suits, dresses, flowers, and cakes to match all four seasons.

I arrived at around noon to find a flurry of activity on that rainy afternoon. I was greeted by Kelsey, the owner, and I was treated to a quick tour of the farmhouse, which has several sitting rooms and a full kitchen, with wood floors throughout, light colors, and rustic decorations. The 2800sq ft area of the venue can host weddings for 50 people, with larger parties being hosted at the barn area of the venue.

I packed light for this session- just grabbed my favorite two cameras, a selection of my prime lenses, and a small studio strobe all stored in my House of Flynn wanderlust bag. My next stop after getting the lay of the land was a large event tent outside the farmhouse to photograph the table setups. Each of the four tables had floral arrangements, place settings, chairs, and some smaller details to suit their season.

Next up were the cakes, provided by Station House BBQ. The cakes were arranged on the wrap-around patio of the farmhouse. My personal favorite was definitely the fall themed cake, with the winter one being a close second.

After the cakes, it was time for the couples sessions! Unfortunately, I had to head home before I was able to work with all four couples, but the time that I did have was great! I’m so used to being in a time crunch on a wedding day that it was nice to be able to relax, have some fun, and make some nice portraits.

This experience at Two Sisters Ranch definitely left a positive impression on me, and I’d love to work there again soon! View the full gallery on Pixieset, or check out some of my favorites down below.

Session Stories

October 2 was my first wedding after returning from being deployed all this year. It felt great to be back in the saddle, so to speak.

The first stop of the morning (after getting chick-n-minis) was Branded Hues Hair co to meet Kaci and the bride, Emily. Emily and her bridesmaids had their hair and makeup done, then Kaci and I headed to Trattoria Pasquale to meet the boys.

Donnie and his groomsmen were in full party mode by the time we arrived, which made for some fun footage. Soon, it was time to head to church and get married!

Christ the King Church was the venue for the ceremony, the staff there did a great job, and was obviously well rehearsed, as the ceremony went off without a hitch.

Finally, the whole group was off to Palma Ceia Country Club, which is definitely one of the most beautiful reception venues I’ve had the chance to work in.

In closing, a big congratulations to Emily and Donnie! Nice to meet you to Kaci, and I’m happy to be back doing what I love after a long time off.

10 questions to ask your wedding photographer

Wedding Tips

Congratulations! You’ve found a photographer with a portfolio you love, now what? Here’s ten questions to ask during your initial meeting that will ensure they’re the one for the job.

1: “Do you have a contract?”
-This one is a dealbreaker, even if you are having a friend photograph your wedding, a simple document that outlines the expectations of each party involved will go a long way to ensure everyone gets what they want out of the deal.
Some things to review in particular:
*When will they arrive, and how long will they stay?
*How/when will photos be delivered?
*What rights to photos do you have?
*Where and how will images from the wedding be used by the photographer?
*What is the retainer fee, and under what circumstances is it refundable?

2: ”What happens if the photographer can’t come for some reason?”
-Having a backup plan for as many things as possible is critical to wedding photography. Your photographer should be able to articulate what action they would take in the event they were unable to attend your wedding on short notice.

3: “What is your experience with weddings?”
-There’s a lot to unpack here, so bear with me. Number of years photographing weddings is not nearly as important as the actual number (whether the main or second photographer) that your photographer has worked, and neither of those things are as important as the training and time your photographer has put in to learning their craft. Which leads me to my next point. Website portfolios are great, especially when they show a variety of photographic situations. With that said, I would suggest you view at least one full wedding before making your decision. Make sure to ask if images on the website are from real weddings or from styled shoots, which are much more forgiving environments to create great work in.

4: “Can I customize a package?”
-Some photographers have multiple packages with every different combination of features possible, while others have a single all-day , all-inclusive package listed. Chances are, if you know what you need, the photographer will be willing to make a package specifically for you…but it’s best to ask.

5: “How long do you retain my images?”
-Let me lead with this; BACK UP YOUR IMAGES WHEN YOU GET THEM. Seriously, seriously…the most important thing you can do is back up your files in multiple locations, preferably at least one cloud-based. That said, your photographer should keep your images safe for some length of time after they are delivered to you, find out how long that will be. (Pro-tip: most photographers never delete data on purpose…however, all storage eventually fails. If you ever lose your wedding images, its worth reaching out to your photographer to see if they still have them, there may be a charge to unarchive them depending on how long ago the wedding was….but it’s worth a try.)

6: “What are your policies for cancellations and reschedules?”
-It’s 2020 and coronavirus is an unfortunate fact of life right now, weddings are being cancelled or rescheduled at a rate which I have never personally experienced. Generally speaking, most photographers are extending an abundance of grace with respect to rescheduling weddings, so long as they have the new date available. There might be a fee to move the wedding, this is something to work out ahead of time. As far as cancellations go, the retainer fee that you pay to book the wedding is almost universally not refundable in the event that you have to cancel.

7: “Do you offer prints or albums?”
-If your photographer offers albums, the two most important factors for longevity of the prints are paper and ink type. Specifically, look for terms like “archival” and “acid free” when referring to paper, and “lightfast” or “archival” when referring to inks. These prints will be significantly more expensive than the ones you may be used to from the local drugstore, but they will maintain their quality for generations if they are properly stored and displayed.
Something to consider, in some states, such as Florida, if a photographer provides a physical product to the client as a part of the wedding package, they are required to charge sales tax on the entire contract. For this reason, some photographers, like myself, recommend that couples create their own prints and albums using Mpix.com, which has high quality and reasonably priced prints, in order to save them potentially hundreds of dollars.

8: “Do you offer video, or partner with any videographers?”
-Having photography and videography teams that work well together will help keep the whole day running smoothly and efficiently, it may also save you some money if you book both services at the same time.

9: “Should I do a first look?”
-This is a personal choice for you and your future spouse to make. When I’m asked for my input, I always suggest doing a first look because it will free up some time after the ceremony, giving you the chance to spend a few minutes alone together to celebrate, or gets you to the party sooner!

10: “Will you be my actual photographer?”
-Some photography companies have several photographers who work as associates under one brand, generally all of these associates are of a similar style and skill level, but it is important that you get to meet your photographer before you spend your whole wedding day with them.
